In September, Come Wine with Us hosted a much anticipated, ladies only event – a day packed with all our favourite treats – the annual Beauty Bubbly & Baking event. This year we had a day jam-packed with tons of special luxuries from all of our sponsors.
The venue was exquisitely nipped, tucked and styled in a joined effort by a trinity of detailed décor doctors: Miele, Phenology Flora and Ceramic Factory. The foundation of any function’s decorative make-up starts with the tables of which there were five – unique in size but similar in features. The base of the room was contrasted with proverbial mascara in the shape of white and black chairs winking like avant-garde lashes in symmetry as if each table demanded much deserved attention from onlookers. The voluptuous lips were colored with shiny to matt ceramics: from retro to quirky to trendy and grouped in arrays of visual delight. Finally, these masters of design gently applied a rounding layer blush and created delicate bouquets placed in the different vases, pots and caricatures from Ceramic Factory. Our room’s face was lifted, lips pursed, eyes sparkling and confident to seize the day.
It was a chilly, fresh and beautiful day. There was much anticipation for the event that was planned for the guests. All the ingredients were set, perfectly weighed and ready to be mixed. On arrival the ladies enjoyed a glass of Laborie Brut while browsing around the newly renovated Miele showroom. The chatter became louder as the self-rising agent to any conversation, bubbly, was gently added and the excitement baked to perfection. Before long is was time for the guests to take their seats and one almost expected a kitchen timer to indicate that the day was ready to enjoy.
Renette Vosloo from ontbytsake kicked off the day’s events with demonstrations of different cakes, scones and brownies she prepared using the easy and convenient NoMu baking kits. Renette was a 2014 Kokkedoor finalist and she proved her culinary skills once again in the Miele kitchen. She certainly spoiled us with her high tea treats; the prettiest little heart petit fours, mini burgers, bacon scones with caramel dipped tomatoes, tiny peach pastries with camembert, petite cupcakes and many other delicious bite-sized indulgences.
Whilst the guest enjoyed their tasty treats all the glasses were topped up for the Laborie MCC tasting. Juliette and Nadia introduced us to their magical world of Laborie and equipped our guests with some interesting facts about the often misunderstood origin of Method Cap Classique. Juliette thrillingly displayed that dry brut does not always require brut force, and is often abdicated with technique as she effortlessly severed the neck of the bottle in a theatrical demonstration of the Sabrage. The type of scene one could imagine on the cover of a femme fatale poster – elegant and powerful.
At the tasting, the MCCs were paired with some delicious chocolate truffles and as if by grand design, created to be married in harmony with each MCC. In every romantic sense of the word each delectable, soft and tangy bite would enhance the taste of every wine. Our guests were treated to the three Laborie MCCs, the first to be tasted was Laborie MCC Blanc de Blanc 2010. This was paired with milk chocolate truffle that was rolled in roasted almonds. For the second MCC, guests had the pleasure to enjoy Laborie’s MCC Brut 2011. This enchanting bubbly was juxtaposed with dark chocolate truffle with whispers of caramel shards. The last pairing of the day was the Laborie MCC Brut Rose 2011, paired with milk chocolate truffle topped with strawberry.
Renette later concluded her kitchen demonstrations and Dr Nox Makunga (Phenology Flora) embellished us with her interesting and insightful world of flowers. We were cultivated not only about the flowers she arranged for table placements, but also cultured as to how cakes ought to be decorated with edible flowers. As a small business owner and lecturer at Stellenbosch University, Dr Nox had plenty of fun and flower-filled-facts to share with us. Advising us on which flowers should be used for edible purposes and which we should rather leave for a bouquet. Together Renette and Nox created a wonderful upside down fig cake decorated with fruit, cheese and some adorable edible flowers. They also decorated a chocolate brownie box filled with a floral surprise.
For pure pampering delight the Dermalogica team did a demonstration on some of our guests. The team exhibited how to do a proper beauty regime on one of the guests and gave us some pretty useful skincare and anti-aging tips. They conducted a skin deep demo and had some great make-up “in a flash” tips for all the ladies to try at home. For their departure, after a day crammed with some exquisite baking treats, enchanted bubbles and some wonderful beauty tips the ladies received a goodie bag with some exciting fillings to take home.
We would like to thank Gerhard and the team from Miele for hosting us at their beautiful showroom and allowing us to make use of the amazing kitchen for all our demonstrations. Gerhard & team did a great job in making sure everyone was taken care of, from the service providers to the very last lady present on the day.
