On the 6th and 7th of July Come Wine With Us joined forces with Durbanville Hills Wine for an evening of great food & wine with a 20s Jazz-inspired twist.
Over At their beautiful cellar which is a quick 20min drive from the city centre and boasts spectacular views of Table Mountain and the Table Bay, guests were welcomed with Durbanville Hills’ first Method Cap Classique which was only released this year.
After a quick welcome and introduction downstairs in their beautiful tasting room, guests headed upstairs to the restaurant (which by the way was awarded as the Best Winelands Restaurant for a 2nd year in a row by guests attending the Autumn Edition of Restaurant Week) to settle in for a delectable 3 course food & wine pairing menu.
The wines on show for the evening were from the Durbanville Hills reserve range, Rhinofields. Named after the indigenous Renosterveld of the area, these wines are produced by combining no more than two to three vineyard blocks which are often from opposite hillsides.
The Rhinofields range consists out of a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Noble Late Harvest, Merlot, Shiraz & Pinotage. Their 2014 Rhinofields Chardonnay was just awarded with a silver medal during the 23rd Chardonnay du Monde which is held annually over in Burgundy, but then we also have to do a special mention to the 2015 Durbanville Hills Chardonnay which was awarded gold and was one of only 6 South African wines of this varietal to win top honours. A remarkable achievement particularly seeing as this is a wine that is available nationwide at a very competitive price-point.
Back to the Rhinofields range, cellar master Martin Moore took our guests through the various wines they’ll be tasting, explaining how they were chosen to match each dish perfectly.
For starters our guests were treated to a platter consisting of a smoked salmon and dill cream cheese roulade served with a spicy tomato salsa, a fresh oyster with cucumber, lemon & Tabasco, and a mini gourmet burger. This tempting trio was paired with their crisp Rhinofields Sauvignon Blanc 2015.
For mains it was a choice between grilled line fish of the day served with potato puree, pine nuts, baby spinach and roasted tomatoes, or Moroccan spiced chicken supreme, potato puree, grilled aubergine, sundried tomato and green olive salsa. Both these dishes were paired with either the Rhinofields Chardonnay 2014 or the Rhinofields Pinotage 2013. (with some guests even opted for a little taste of both)
And then dessert was a dark chocolate and hazelnut ganache tart served with berry and ginger compote and Chantilly cream, paired with a chilled glass of Rhinofields Merlot 2012. #Perfection
It was a fabulous evening in the most beautiful setting and our guests had a blast showing us their 1920s flair. We have to say a big thank you to Durbanville Hills for being such generous and gracious hosts. Then also another thank you to Jomeri Photography for capturing all the magical moments.
