The Simonsburg mountains were brought to Pretoria to end the year’s events off with a bang. Our partner this time round was Plaisir De Merle, a wine rich in history and experience, a wine that harmonises historical vineyard practices with modern winemaking techniques, a process guided by winemaker Niel Bester. This month’s wines were the perfect elegant accomplice to our Bond theme for the evening. Guests showed up at Heat Grill Room “dressed to kill.” With a delightfully biting Plaisir De Merle MCC Brut in hand, the scene was set.
Starters presented Seared Norwegian salmon served with fresh asparagus and mild wasabi sauce that coalesced with a creamy chardonnay in an innovative way. The intensity of wasabi meeting tones of toasted almond and butterscotch was an unexpected and exciting alliance for guests.
Mains brought options. Lots of delectable options. The constant: a diverse Cabernet Sauvignon deeply influenced by flavours of blackberries, dark chocolate and sweet vanilla, which met with each main course meal like a Bond love affair.
Option 1: The soul mates. A Rossini Sirloin Steak topped with chicken liver onion and port sauce. The dish was destined for its complicated red counterpart.
Option 2: The excitement of eastern exoticism. Grilled chicken breasts in creamy masala sauce. Paired with the Cab Sav it was an attraction of opposites resulting in a power couple.
Option 3: A relationship of depth. Grilled baby sole and calamari served with tartar sauce; a rich and creamy dish whose depth matches that of the red.
And finally, the vegetarian option: Zucchini Pasta and brinjals were the Mediterranean babe whose napolitan sauce, mozzarella and basil brought the red to its knees.
After a dramatic taste experience of mains came… even more drama in dessert: Dark chocolate Italian cake served with fresh cherries and cream cheese frosting. This paired with the dark and elegant Grand Plaisir that offers sweet and velvety depth.
A deeply flavourful dining experience was beautifully balanced by the calm and constant flow of Ndomiso Nyovane’s jazzy trumpet tunes, which eventually had everyone on their feet. The evening wrapped on an elegant and indulgent high. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect way to close the year than with the class that our partners Heat Grill Room, Plaisir De Merle and our beautiful guests brought.
