Bringing Johannesburg its first Come Whisky With Us event of the year, we knew the expectations were high, yet it wasn’t hard to see why we chose to collaborate with the brands that we did, namely Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky – known to be the world’s best grain whisky – and South Africa’s best single malt producer: Three Ships Whisky.

The best whisky in the world should be enjoyed in the best atmosphere, which is why we hosted our event at Malt Bar & Grill at Montecasino – a restaurant synonymous with great whisky and home to over 80 different malts and blends on an ever-growing list. An atmosphere is incomplete without the right music, so we sought out Lara Gear to provide our live entertainment for the evening. Lara is an experimental musician who is recognised as an up and coming artist who has featured alongside some of South Africa’s best talent. Her soulful voice perfectly complemented the evening’s atmosphere and good vibes.

Arrival drinks included the Bain’s Leopard and Lime Cocktail and a Three Ships Whisky Select Royal Buxton Cocktail. After much chatter and milling about, guests were seated and served a starter of origanum-inspired chicken skewers which were served on a bed of zucchini fries and accompanied by tomato, cucumber, feta and tzatziki salad. This was paired with the Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky.

Expecting nothing less of a bar and grillhouse, mains consisted of a tender 300g rib-eye steak served alongside parmesan-roasted green beans and crispy potatoes. The steak was accompanied by an exceptional green peppercorn and whisky sauce, and it was paired with the Three Ships Whisky 5 Year Old.

Capping off what we would deem the perfect evening was a velvety vanilla bean panna cotta. Served with salted caramel hazelnut brittle that added a whole new dimension to this classic dessert, the whisky pairing of choice was the Three Ships Whisky 10 Year Old Single Malt Vintage 2006. Even guests who don’t really consider themselves as “having a sweet tooth” took great joy in indulging in this magnificently paired dessert.

All-in-all, it was a magical evening. Between the cosy atmosphere of the restaurant, the soulful sounds of our live entertainment, the delicious food and the expertly-paired whiskies, the first Come Whisky With Us event of the year set the bar for future events.
