Is there a better way to celebrate entering the second part of the year than with a unique experience at one of Johannesburg’s must-visit restaurants? The answer is quite simply “no”. Representing the Johannesburg leg of the Like Father, Like Son Come Wine With Us events were Alto Wines and Van Der Linde Restaurant (VDL) – one of Linden’s hottest restaurants, marked by its four components: the Deli/Bakery, the Gin & Juice Bar, the Wine Shop and the Restaurant. Known for its very own love for wine, VDL was an obvious choice for us as a venue for our latest Come Wine With Us event.
Just as any wonderful evening should, ours started with some bubbly: Pongracz Brut MCC was what guests were greeted with when walking through the door and into an evening that held the promise of a great time and delightful company. Perfect for a wintery evening, the starter consisted of a smoked tomato & chorizo soup served alongside wild apple sourdough bread and a delicious Alto Rouge (a firm-favourite among our guests). Following the starter was an exquisitely prepared short rib main served with pommes puree, carrots and sauteed leeks. This was paired with the Alto Cabernet Sauvignon – the perfect accompaniment to such a hearty, nourishing main.
The highlight of the evening for most, of course, tends to be the final course. Cinnamon berliners served with 90% chocolate ice cream and chilli syrup proved to be an unsurprising hit. Paired with the Alto Shiraz, the mature dessert capped off an evening we – and hopefully our guests – won’t soon forget. While VDL delivered an exceptional dessert, there’s no denying that after an evening of meals as delicious as those we enjoyed, everything could be considered a highlight in its own way – from the music and company to the dinner and drinks, everything seemed to hit the mark. This was just one Come Join Us event, but all of them deliver the same delight and quality as that of our Like Father, Like Son event did.
