We’ve covered our history before: Come Join Us started out as six people sitting around a kitchen table with a focus on an appreciation for good food and wine. Now, seven years later, it has evolved into so much more (best believe food and wine still for part of this lovely adventure). August saw the launch of the first-ever Come Travel With Us curated tour – the ultimate food and wine long weekend. Our love for food, wine and unforgettable experiences expanded from that little kitchen table, right into Paarl (and across South Africa).
Not just a curator!
Our guide for the weekend was none other than our very own founder, Sybil Doms, the perfect example that we are just as excited about and invested in our experiences as you are. Sybil organised an itinerary like no-other, which not only delivered mouth-wateringly good food and wine, but also bus-loads of laughter (literally) and memories that will not soon be forgotten by our wonderful guests who attended.
What we got up to
Where does one even begin? The activities Sybil was able to fit into a weekend were akin to a week-long getaway. Yet somehow, there was still time to relax. Guests arrived at Nantes-Vue Paarl Guest House on the evening of the 8th of August, greeted not only by friendly faces but also a welcome pack in their room. Cementing what would be a truly intimate experience, dinner was then served by Sybil’s own aunt, owner of Plum Kitchen. On the menu was a comforting harvest table feast, which included a gorgeous selection of Robertson wines. After much chatter and socialisation, guests retired to their rooms to get a good night’s rest before the adventures of the next day.
The 9th started with great excitement and no time to waste – there was a day of fun to be had, after all! Friday’s itinerary included tastings at three wine estates:
- Plaisir de Merle
- Rupert and Rothschild
- Nederburg Wine Estate
A day of tastings call for an evening of feasting, of course. After returning to Nantes-Vue Paarl Guest House, guests were able to enjoy close to three hours of relaxation time before departing for Mynhardt at Station House, where guests were treated to dinner with the Kokkedoor winner along with craft gin and tonic, a three-course dinner and a premium KWV wine pairing.
The following day’s itinerary included a tasting at KWV’s Cathedral Cellar, following by another tasting at Durbanville Hills. The tasting was just the beginning of the latter stop, which also included a two-course lunch paired with more expertly-selected wines. Lunch was followed by another opportunity for relaxation back at Nantes-Vue Paarl Guest House. The evening included dinner at the venue, where guests enjoyed a hearty curry evening and the company of one another and laughter late into the night.
Sunday the 11th of August was a day of mixed emotions – sadness at the realisation that the weekend had come to an end, but happiness and fulfilment after an unforgettable trip spent meeting new people, experiencing Paarl at its best, and of course trying the delectable food and wine on offer in the area.
