You don’t have to convince us that “The Great Life” starts with a glass of wine. For this reason, it should come as no surprise that September’s Come Wine With Us spring celebration was perfectly paired with Laborie Wines, who share the mantra “la grande vie”. Our associated restaurant for the evening is a real hidden gem: “TLC On The Track” – The Local Culture – is located within the Land Rover Experience Centre and is inspired by the history, people and places of the City of Gold. Comfortable and trendy, it was the embodiment of our night’s theme.
Although we consider all Come Wine With Us and Come Join Us events to be special, this one was prefaced by the warm breeze of new beginnings, which could mean only one thing: spring had truly sprung, and what better way to celebrate #LaGrandeVie than in a season that represents exactly that?
TLC on the Track proved to be perfect hosts for the evening, setting the stage for a night that encouraged coming together and not only mingling, but also bonding over shared delights (the delights being the wonderful food and wine, of course). First on the menu was an array of canapes, which consisted of grilled nectarine with brie cheese, baby basil leaves and roasted crumbed pecan on a crostini; and a summer melon, herb and black pepper crusted goat’s cheese accompanied by prosciutto and edible flowers. These were paired with the Laborie MCC Brut, which Laborie describes as showing “a vibrant intensity, that remains elegant and in style”.
Mains reflected our deepest passions as Come Join Us: friends and loved ones gathered over generous servings of lovingly prepared food, paired with unforgettable and perfectly-paired wines. The mains for the night were served harvest table-style, and were paired with the Laborie Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon and Laborie Chennin Blanc. Mains consisted of:
- Eclectic variety of flavors served on platters, bowls and boards
- Karoo lamb meatballs, roasted in a red wine and black current reduction
- Coronation chicken with litchi topped with roasted slivered almonds
- Couscous & fresh herbs with fried onions
- Upside down cherry tomato tart
- Crunchy Asian salad with roasted pineapple
- Green herb salad served with Champagne and mustard vinaigrette accompanied by black berries
- Artisan bread with flavored butters
Suffice to say, there was something for everyone (and every pairing, at that – with both the Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc available to enjoy). Laborie describes their Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon as “smooth, elegant and juicy”, while the Laborie Chennin Blanc is described as “lively and fresh”, showing prominent aromas of green apple, tropical fruit and litchi with underlying hints of oak and almonds.
Last on the menu was a unique dessert, even by our standards. Guests enjoyed a refreshing vanilla rose ice cream popsicle with toasted macadamia nut drizzle dipped in milk chocolate sauce and crumbed with caramalised rose petals, pistachio and smoked salt. Not only did this feel like a poetic tribute to spring, it was also the perfect accompaniment to the Pineau de Laborie, a magnificent fortified wine that displays upfront aromas of rose petals, fresh cherries, plums and nougat. A match made in heaven, some would say. Heaven on earth in a little corner of Fourways, now that sounds like #LaGrandeVie to us!
