About Alto wines

Alto, derived from the Latin word ‘altus’ meaning ‘high’, refers to the altitude of our estate’s steep mountain vineyards. Located in a region called the ‘Golden Triangle’, this award-winning wine-growing area stretches from the foothills of the Helderberg to the edge of the Stellenbosch Mountains in the Cape Winelands.

As the proverbial Promised Land for South African red wine, our terroir provides an ideal landscape for growing grapes thanks to a unique confluence of cooling Atlantic Ocean winds and some of the oldest geological soils in the world. With over 90 hectares of vine, the majority of which are Cabernet Sauvignon, to curate into Alto’s small and focused portfolio of six wines, the result is an expressive range of cool climate wines with intense fruit appeal, longevity and complexity that always reflect their origin of excellence.

The name ‘Alto’ also references our pursuit for continually reaching new heights through our winemaking. From scrupulous vineyard management and hand-picked grape selection to unwavering dedication to each wine in the cellar, every step is carefully monitored. In addition, Alto is embracing more environmental and social sustainability techniques in order to retain our land’s exceptional biodiversity and to empower the vineyard teams that work within it.

As a farm with over 100 years of history, we are proud to have only changed winemaking hands five times. In 1919, founder Hennie Malan identified the farm’s potential to pursue a viticultural vocation, and so began a family affair in crafting fine red wine. Currently, winemakerBertho van der Westhuizen heads the helm, following on in a tradition of unwavering commitment to ensure a consistent style permeates into every bottle.

One of Durban’s culinary gems, Al Firenze was established in 1990 and is under the helm of Tony de Sousa (previously of the Coimbra Restaurants).

Tucked away in the leafy suburb of La Lucia, it would be easy to think that no one knows where to find this quaint Italian trattoria, but just the opposite is true. The superb quality food and relaxing ambience have been a jealously-guarded secret of locals for some time now.

You can’t go wrong with favourites like perfect pizza, spinach tortellini in sage butter with zabaione, or grilled prawns, but the seafood is the star of the show! Think super-fresh linefish grilled with fresh herbs and served with fresh seasonal vegetables! There’s also plenty of heart-warming fare for those wintry days, like succulent lamb saddle, rabbit casserole, wild boletus mushrooms cooked with garlic and parsley or wild boar casserole.

There is something pleasingly old-fashioned about this casual trattoria with its’ red checked tablecloths, flags and aromas of the wood-fired oven. It’s down-to-earth charm at its best and the ever-present buzz proves that that’s just what people enjoy!
